I thought I loved you then
When first looks became long, longing gazes
And smiles became extended conversations
I thought I loved you then.
I thought I loved you then
When love was newly pledged
Fingers intwined, toes burrowing in the sand
I thought I loved you then
But now when love has been tested and tried
And has come through stronger and deeper
Now after many trials, heartaches, laughter and tears
Now I know that I only thought I loved you then.
